Materials Needed:
Healthy chrysanthemum plant (mother plant)
Sharp, sterile scissors or pruning shears
Small pots or trays
Potting mix (preferably a well-draining one)
Rooting hormone (optional, but helpful)
Water spray bottle or watering can
Clear plastic bag or humidity dome (optional)
Choose the Cutting:
Select a non-flowering shoot from a healthy chrysanthemum.
Cut a 3–5 inch (8–13 cm) length just below a node (where the leaf joins the stem).
Prepare the Cutting:
Remove lower leaves, leaving only 2–3 leaves at the top.
Dip the cut end in rooting hormone (optional but speeds up rooting).
Plant the Cutting:
Stick the cutting into moist potting mix.
Firm the soil around the cutting.
Create a Humid Environment:
Cover with a plastic bag or use a humidity dome to retain moisture.
Place in indirect sunlight.
Care:
Keep the soil moist but not soggy.
Remove the cover daily for a few minutes to let in fresh air.
Wait for Roots:
Roots should develop in 2–4 weeks.
Tug gently to feel resistance (a sign roots are growing).
If you're starting with chrysanthemum seedlings (already germinated young plants), here's how to care for them:
Transplanting:
Once seedlings have 2–3 true leaves, transplant to individual pots or outdoors if the risk of frost is gone.
