Oleanders grow best in full sunshine. Growing them in partial shade will result in reduced flower production. They also will grow in a variety of soils from dry sandy soils to moist clay, and unlike many plants, will tolerate high levels of salt content. Oleanders are also generally tolerant of ordinary drought conditions, although it may cause slower growth and reduction in flower production. During dry conditions make sure to provide 1 to 2 inches of water per week.
Oleanders generally do not require fertilization, but if you want to increase flower production and plant growth, apply 2 pounds each of nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium per 1000 square feet in early spring and early fall. Pruning is another way to increase flower production. Oleanders should be pruned just above the leaf nodes, or where the three leaves come out of the branch. This forces new branching at each node. More branches mean more flowers.
Remove dead, damaged or diseased branches anytime. Removing these limbs will help reduce stress on the shrub and promote healthier growth.
LIght:Oleander prefers full sun. It will also tolerate partial shade, but its foliage won't be as dense. It is also tolerant of heat, drought, wind, and coastal conditions.
Soil:Plant in well-drained soil for best results. Oleander shrubs can adapt to many kinds of soil conditions: poor soil, sandy soil, and a range of soil pH levels. Like many native Mediterranean plants, oleanders prefer alkaline soil, but they will grow in acidic or neutral soil,
Water:Water whenever the top inch of the soil becomes dry.
