"Vinca seedling" refers to a young plant of the Vinca genus, commonly known as periwinkle. There are two main types of Vinca:
Vinca major and Vinca minor (trailing periwinkles) – perennial groundcovers.
Catharanthus roseus (commonly called annual vinca or Madagascar periwinkle) – often grown from seed for its colorful flowers.
Germination time: 10–21 days
Ideal soil temp for germination: ~75–78°F (24–26°C)
Light needs for germination: Preferably in darkness (cover lightly with soil)
Seedling appearance:
Cotyledons (first leaves): Small, rounded or oval
True leaves: Glossy, green, elongated with a central vein
Growth rate: Slow initially, then more vigorous in warm weather
Transplanting time: When seedlings have 2–3 true leaves and are strong enough to handle
Light: Full sun to partial shade
Water: Keep moist, but not soggy; they are drought-tolerant once established
Soil: Well-draining, neutral to slightly acidic
Fertilizer: Light feeding with a balanced fertilizer during growth phase
